Homophones
The tasks in this section are designed to improve language and spelling skills, enhance vocabulary, and ensure a strong grasp of homophones. In the comprehension section of the SEAG test, students are expected to recognise homophones, while in the spelling section, they are required to pinpoint instances of homophones being used incorrectly.
Synonyms
These tasks revolve around language comprehension and application, specifically focusing on synonyms. The exercises involve selecting words with similar meanings to those provided, encouraging students to broaden their vocabulary and grasp contextual word usage. The passage-based synonym task extends this by prompting students to identify alternative words within a given context.
Antonyms
This section involves identifying antonyms for given words in sentences and within a passage. In the sentence exercises, students are asked to circle the antonym from the options provided. The words chosen cover a variety of contexts, promoting an understanding of antonyms in different contexts. Additionally, in the passage-based exercise, students are tasked with finding antonyms for specific terms within the context of a narrative.
Contractions
This task focuses on contractions. In the first part, students will complete a table by turning pairs of words into contractions. For example, “I am” becomes “I’m.” The second part involves identifying contractions in sentences. Students will choose the correct contraction for underlined words in sentences. In the final part, students will read a passage about Belfast Castle and select eight contractions from the given options. This task helps reinforce your child’s understanding of contractions, a crucial aspect of language skills in both reading and writing.
Simile
These tasks introduce and reinforce the concept of similes while providing examples.
The task itself involves matching each simile with its correct meaning. The task aims to enhance language comprehension and expression by familiarising students with the use and purpose of similes.
Metaphor
This task introduces and explores the concept of metaphors with examples. The task aims to reinforce understanding by having students identify metaphors from a list of sentences by placing a tick next to each one. The task encourages students to recognise and appreciate the use of metaphors in language, fostering both comprehension and creative expression.
